The Responsibility of Fortune

November 20th

If you’re in the luckiest one per cent of humanity, you owe it to the rest of humanity to think about the other 99 per cent.

Warren Buffett

Extraordinary fortune brings with it the responsibility to remember the commonalities we share with the majority of humanity. To be truly successful, it's crucial to maintain a connection with the realities of the broader population.

The marketplace is a mingle of diverse needs and wants, not just those of the privileged few. Ignoring the needs of the majority is not just a moral failing, but a misunderstanding of the economic landscape.

We must also heed the call towards empathy. Privilege brings with it the duty to understand and uplift others, to appreciate the interconnectivity of our experiences. This is not a call to downplay our achievements, but rather to extend our vision beyond our own self-interests and consider the broader societal impact of our actions.

In the world of investing, those who manage to keep a firm grasp on the realities of the many, rather than just focusing on the few, will not only be more economically successful, but also more humanely conscious.
